Trick Mirror: Check Out the Summer’s Hottest Beauty Looks

We’re serving up precious makeup tricks that will guide you to summer’s biggest beauty looks.

High temperatures. High shine, high gloss, high time.

The season’s hottest trends are treading familiar waters but only in higher degrees with the return of gloss in all its intensity and shine. This time, however, we are wearing them with barely-there makeup. We are also seeing high shine via highlighters and sparkly embellishments (thanks to some last-minute inspiration from HBO’s Euphoria).

Time to burn brighter this season.

Wine-stained Gloss
by Bobbi Brown

Alas, after years of everything matte, gloss has finally crept back into our hearts.

The nude/red glossy lip was spotted over on Chanel, Gucci, and Off-White’s runways and we have to admit: it’s a super fresh look ideal for spring.

Our advice? Take it up a notch with a wine-stained gloss best paired with a barely-there face, says makeup artist Jeff Marquez of Bobbi Brown.

To achieve the look, Jeff begins with the Vitamin Enriched Face Base to serve as a primer to creating glowy skin. He swipes Bronzing Powder in shade Natural on the sides of the face to effect a warm glow. Then he topped the cheeks with Blush in the shade Nectar and finished off with Highlighting Powder in shade Bronze Glow

To create the wine-stained gloss, Jeff used Luxe Matte Lip Color in Red Carpet on the center of lips and carefully spread it outward. He then polished the look with Clear Lip Gloss for that perfectly bitten look.

We’re still not over coral. It just never gets old. The difference this year, however, is a bolder sensibility to go all out monochromatic. Not only is it super easy, but it’s also pretty minimal with only a few multi-use products in a universally flattering shade.

Tamara Hernandez from NARS recommends using the Radiance Primer SPF35 to revive dull skin and add radiance to the complexion. This is followed by the Sheer Glow Foundation to even out skin while keeping a natural glow. Tamara recommends the use of fingertips for application for a more skin-like finish.

Here’s how you can make the most of your makeup products. To create this look, Tamara used The Multiple in Puerto Vallarta, an iconic NARS product ideal for adding a natural blush to cheeks, eyes, and lips. She topped it with the shades Hot Line and Crushed from the Afterglow Palette for the eyes, Exhibit A and Taj Mahal blush on the cheeks to intensify the hues. Create a “lit from within glow” with a dab of Illuminator in shade Copacabana on the high points of the face. Leave everything with a light dusting of Light Reflecting Setting Powder and finish the look with a swipe of Lipstick in the shade Casablanca topped with Afterglow lip balm in Torrid.

Pretty and Pearly in Pink

 Kanebo

Once confined to festival borders and high fashion presentation, embellishments or appliqués on the face have finally become a makeup look to seriously consider. We have Euphoria’s Doniella Davy to thank for this jump into the mainstream and there’s been no looking back since.

Get creative and channel your inner Bohemian princess with these easy tips from Kanebo artist, Floe Tapayan

To begin, using your fingertips, apply and gently spread the Kanebo Exceptional Primer all over your face. Cup your face with your palms which will in turn blur pores, fine lines, and even out your complexion. Favorites from the Japanese label for creating the perfect base include Kanebo Exceptional Cream Foundation in OCC.  A strong brushed up brow was achieved with a swipe of Kanebo Brow Mascara 02 (Brown). Create definition for the eyes using Kanebo Dual Eyeliner Liquid 01 (Neutral Black) and Kanebo Natural Framing Mascara 01 (Solid Black). For lips, apply a layer of Kanebo Moisture Rouge 11.

Once your look is ready, simply pick out your face gem of choice—crystals, pearls, the possibilities are limitless. To apply your gems, make sure to wipe off the makeup on the area where you will place them so that it sticks firmly on the skin.

Silver Summer Belle
by Clinique

The metallic eye is a staple for the holidays. And it is looking fresher than ever in all its summer glory.

We’re seeing silver this season done in lighter intensities and with a silkier finish. It is paired with all things high shine and anchored with a soft pink lip and warm, soothing contours.

Joemar Celiz of Clinique recommends starting with the Beyond Perfecting Liquid Foundation + Concealer SPF 19+++. He then sets skin with Blended Face Powder in Invisible Blend for a natural-looking finish.

When working on a summer silver eye, he suggests using the All About Shadow Duo in Nightcap. Apply the darker shades onto the outer lids and creases of the eye. Swipe on silver eye shadow onto the rest of the eyelids.

To complete the look, Joemar uses the Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight in Hefty Highlight for glowing glass skin. He creates contours using the Chubby Stick Sculpting Contour in Curvy Contour. For the lips, he dabs on the Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Mighty Mimosa.
