10 Helpful Tips for Putting On Eye Makeup

Your eyes are often referred to as the windows to your soul. The right kind of eye makeup, coupled with a healthy skincare routine, can do wonders for your look. If eye makeup intimidates you, here are ten helpful tips. (Don’t worry–all ten tips are beginner-friendly!)

1. Never underestimate the importance of eye primers.

You work so hard to put on eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara. But in a few hours, greasy lids will just erase all of those away. That’s where an eyeshadow primer comes in handy. It helps your eye makeup last longer.

Try:  NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (Php 1,350)

This product is lightweight, but it gets the job done. It helps make your eyeshadow look more pigmented. More importantly, it helps your eye makeup last longer.

2. Understand (and love!) your eye shape.

There are different kinds of eyes, which means there are also different ways of applying eye makeup. The first step is to identify what kind of eye shape you have. Monolid? Hooded? Double lid? After identifying your eye shape, you can then explore different tutorial videos and see which works for you.

3. Keep track of expiration dates.

Some people are surprised when they find out that a mascara’s lifespan is only three months. But it’s not just the mascara that you have to keep track off–it’s everything in your makeup kit! Take special note of those you use around the eye area.

If the expiration dates get chipped away in your makeup kit, it might be best to keep a simple note in your phone. That way, you’re aware of when to throw out expired makeup.

4. Remove eye makeup properly.

The skin under your eyes are more sensitive than the skin in other parts of your face. That’s why when removing makeup, you have to be extra gentle around that area. Some even suggest using your ring finger (the weakest finger) to apply products in that area.

This is especially applicable when you’re removing eye makeup. You may be tired, sleepy, and too lazy to remove makeup. But sleeping with makeup on will wreak havoc on your skin. You can use an effective makeup remover that minimizes the effort.

Try: Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make-Up Remover (Php 1,550)

This oil-free and S.D. alcohol-free gel dissolves all traces of eye and lip makeup, including stubborn mascara.

5. Highlight the inner corners of your eyes.

This can help make your eyes pop–and we’re all for multi-tasking products that give you the most bang for your buck! Just make sure to blend your highlighter properly.

If you want an example, you can head to Laura Mercier lead artist Mark Qua’s Instagram page. Just check out how Mark was able to make the eyes look even more tantalizing. If you look closely, you’ll notice the champagne-colored highlighter around the inner corners of her eyes.

6. Use highlighter (again) on your brow bones.

Speaking of highlighters, we have another use for it! Put some highlighter directly under your eyebrows. This would add some height to the arch of your eyebrows. You can blend using your finger, because the natural warmth from your fingers would help blend and diffuse the highlighter.

7. Add eye serums and moisturizers to your skincare regimen.

We all know that prevention is better than cure. Before the onset of skin problems, start investing in a good skincare routine for your entire face and for your eyes. A little goes a long way with eye serums and eye moisturizers, so they’re worth investing in!

Try: Clarins Defining Eye Lift (Php 2,750)

This is an innovative eye treatment that has triple action benefits that relieves, drains, and brightens the eye contour.

8. Use natural remedies to reduce swollenness of your eyes.

You can use a cold spoon or a used (and dried) tea bag to remove swollenness of eyes in the morning.

9. Remember: glasses don’t need to ruin your eye makeup.

For women wearing glasses, you don’t have to choose between eye makeup and glasses. Wearing a shadow that is lighter and brighter than your frames will make your eyes stand out. Just make sure that the color of your eyeshadow and of your glasses don’t compete with each other.

Try: Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Stick (Php 1,750.00)

This is a long-lasting, do-it-all eye shadow that’s a stroke of genius—just swipe and go. This budge-proof formula stays put for 8 hours.

10. Not all eyeliners are made equal.

Achieving the perfect flick for eyeliners is difficult. That’s why it’s all the more frustrating when your eyeliner gets smudged midday. Choose an eyeliner that doesn’t easily smudge.

Try: Stay All Day® Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner (Php 1,150.00)
